The Knowledge Exchange was announced recently by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, Germany), Danmark’s Elektroniske Fag-og Forskningsbibliotek (DEF), JISC and SURF Foundation to create pan-European initiative.

Now while I have no inside knowledge on this few thing strikes me there mission according to JISC press release is:-

“Mission
• support the innovative development and use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education and research
• increase return on investment
• Enhance services and project through improved communications.”
JISC Press Release (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=partner_ke).

As I see it this organisation has few roles where it will be most beneficial such as to coordinate projects between those countries which is never a bad thing. But also in being able to lobby Europe on education issues which is defiantly a good thing as while there are many organisations in UK that lobby UK government there are not many if any at all that collective lobby Europe.

I for one can see great beneficial for this with JISC being one of main stakeholders in the National Education Network (NEN) this could lead to cross content and working with Europe partners. As the next logical step after NEN is the Global Education Network which does exist at moment via UN but this moment is looking at improving third world computer usages etc. Knowledge Exchange has resources to share between European countries and I think this will certainly help education people around world to become a closer community.
