BETT Mobbing

January 4, 2006 |

Next week I am due to go to BETT Show which is a big educational show that happens in London every year.

Anyway I received in an email a link to a website that is attempting to use mobile phones to guide people to interesting stuff at BETT.

You can also while at the show ‘text in’ interesting things that you found.

Hopefully it will not be overtaken by suppliers who use it as way to promote there goods! but we will see.

What did worry me was the ease that I could assign a mobile number to an account. There was no checks to see if I was the owner of that mobile.

While it does say in an email once you sign up: -

“When you arrive at BETT, go to the NESTA Futurelab stand (Y30 in the National Hall) to collect your BETT Mobbing badge – this way everyone taking part will be able to identify other ‘BETT Mobbers’. You will then receive text messages throughout the day notifying you of interesting stands to be ‘mobbed’ - messages will be sent to you in plenty of time for you to get to the stand.”

So I hope this means that until you visit the store your account won’t be able to receive text messages, as otherwise I could see the system being abused.

They also say it is free which should mean they will not be using the premium numbers (the ones that charge) to send out the text messages .

Either way it is certainly a good idea way to use new media creatively.
